You and I come from completely different worlds. You are the only son of a king; forcing you to be the perfect son. You’ve got to be the best at dancing, at courting, at sailing, and pretty much everything. I on the other hand, have six other sisters so often times, I go unnoticed.
You’re the prince of all the fairest dreams. I’m the princess that no one wants stuck with. I like adventure and am fearless when it comes to my curiosity. My father just wants me to stay safe in the palace where he can keep an eye on everything.
There’s a big difference between you and I however. You enjoy walking on land, and well, I swim. I live under the waves, in a palace that no land-walker has seen. You don’t even know that such a land exists. You’re happy and contempt with living out your days in the walled in palace.
Every day I swim to where the water meets the land. I don’t go in too far. I find a rock to perch on, and I sing. Every day, it’s a song of longing and wishful thoughts. I sing and sing until I see the sun touch the tip of the highest Castle Peak. Then, I turn, and swim back into the deep blue to my home.
(This is where we’ll begin): One day, you decide to take a walk along the shoreline that your castle is edged with. You hear the sounds of someone singing. It enchants you, makes you want to see such the person making such beautiful sounds. The moment I see you on beach though, I get scared, duck under the wave, and the singing stops. You try and think nothing more of it. You brush it off as just a siren of the waves and go on about your business. Until the next day, you return; this time, on a boat, looking out onto the waves. You’ve got business in other lands that you must take care of.
It’s the same time of day, and I reach the surface and begin singing. Before I know what’s happening, the large ship is coming around the bend, out toward sea. I don’t notice, and continue my singing. As you hear the singing, you order the boat stopped. Your shipmates are wary. They think it’s the sirens song, come to take their Capitan. You’ll hear nothing of it, but by the time the ship is quiet once more, the singing has stopped and I fallen beneath the surface.
This time, I set on following your boat. I feel as if something about the human oddity draws me near. I want to see what it’s like to be one of those with legs.
But as the sun falls below the horizon, the real evil befalls the ship. A storm has begun to grow and your ship is now in the middle of it. The winds of Poseidon’s anger whip and howl as your men try and stay on board. The large waves crash onto the ship, making men get thrown overboard. You’re trying to steer your boat free, but the wrong move, throws you overboard as well.
I watch from below, wondering what has gotten my grandfather god so angry. I’m unable to help some of the men, they cannot swim, and the hard waves knock them unconscious, but you are strong. You try to swim to the surface, but it seems that no luck seems to be with you, but I am.
Once I get you to the beach again, I sing hoping that I can stay with you. You awaken to the sound of the music, but before you have a chance to really get your ground and your ability to see, I’m gone.
Now you’re hell-bent on finding the woman who saved you so you can thank her, and she wants to find a way to be with you and really get to know such a fascinating creature, what’ll happen?
