Revelation of Vis
On the planet Earth, The species that has come to call itself the dominant race were faced with the most unusual conflict that destroyed their beliefs on the law that governed their thought on nature and what limited conscience that their primal brethren possessed. The year was 2013, one year after the supposed end of the world which was revealed to be only a new comet to pass within our view, nothing more than a Mayan event that was superimposed as a doomsday event and when the day came most were overjoyed with disappointment. The year following was just as normal as the last with an increase of pollution, deforestation and hype of climate change yet to come. Within the small Canadian town of Carrot River, the new year’s summer had similar attributed to an old fashioned style of American living with crime low and cars cheep. Fathers and sons tossed various objects around to the amusement of the dog while mothers and daughters gossiped about the best looking styles of hair while grooming the cat. When it came time on that particular day to end the festivities and enjoy the traditional customary banquet that is “supper” a broadcast on the home television halted the attention of the humbled family. A news report that a group of a random assortment of animals attacked and killed a police officer in the neighbouring town of Nipiwan, the family’s attention was draw only for a second before shrugging of the abnormality then returning to their meal. Conversation over the death sparked the fathers anger, not wanting to lose his appetite he demanded the topic switch or end altogether which shortly after hearing the dogs moans and growls and shrieks the father throws his napkin to the plate uttering curses about the dog, thinking it’s a coyote he opens a cabinet and retrieves a large 12 gauge pump action shotgun with the plastic feature imitating a wooden appearance and pocketful of shells with his soap covered dirt hands then a long black flashlight with small ridges down the handle. Equipping his coat he rips the door open then loosens the grip for it to shut slowly as his family cautiously watches him disappear into the dusk.
The mother begins to stack the utensils in the dishwasher as the son retreats to the television and the daughter to the couch with a gossip magazine. The calm atmosphere is dismissed when the sound of an enormous bang, they all snap at the point of origin to assess what had transpired and over the ringing in their ears they heard the terrified screaming of the father, “ Holy Fuck!” another shot rang out and another, the daughter cried in horror and curled up and the son shouted towards the door “Dad?” with worried curiosity, the mother dropped her plates and against her will ran out the door to locate the father. The son and daughter grabbed each other and ran to the small window in the living room covered by cheap curtains to hide the chip of missing wood sealed by duct tape. They peered out onto the porch with nothing but the lamp light on and the broken collar of the dog on the steps hearing the mothers cries to the husband to reveal his location and his status but was met only with silence. The mother turned slowly towards the window, as if she knew her children would be staring at her. A snap in the bush and she turned her head again looking at nothing. Silence broke as she murmured the name of the father, “Stanley?”. Silence. She returned to her position and glared at the children with fear and within the split second the dog leaped out and ripped the mother from her rooted position on the ground throwing her into the dusk that the father had left for. The children fell back at the astonishment of what had happened, the thought of what they just saw had not registered in their brains yet, fearfully they ran to the entrance griping the door frame screaming “Mom!” and were met by muffled screams over the sound of clothing being torn and just as there was, all sound stopped. Silence.
